YIL Overview

Yale in London offers Yale undergraduates the opportunity to take a spring or summer program at the Paul Mellon Centre. Courses carry Yale College credit and students do not have to apply for a junior term abroad to participate in Yale in London since it is a Yale program

Program & Course Structure

There are two types of Yale in London program; a full semester program that runs in the spring and consists of four courses/credits and a shorter summer program with two courses/credits, taught intensively over six weeks. Because of the popularity of the summer program, we offer two overlapping sessions (June-July or July-August).

The Yale in London courses cover British literature, drama, history, history of art and architecture. Classes are given by faculty based at the Centre, visiting professors from Yale and leading British academics. The teaching at the Centre is enriched by the unique opportunities London has to offer. Fieldwork visits are an important part of all courses and every program includes a residential field trip outside London or in Europe (see London and Beyond).

Cost and Funding

Students on the full spring semester program pay the regular Yale College tuition fee. Rates for accommodation (comfortable central London apartments) are charged at the regular on-campus rate. The cost of meals is not included but housing will always have full self-catering facilities. Those on the summer program pay a fee ($6,500 in 2009) for tuition and accommodation (usually bed-and-breakfast in the University of London dorms). Fees include overnight field trips, scheduled theatre visits and entrance charges for museum and gallery visits. For both programs, students must meet the costs of travel to and from the UK and personal expenses while in London. Those eligible for financial aid and seeking assistance for the full semester should apply to the University in the normal way. The Centre will endeavor to provide financial aid for summer program students as appropriate.

Application Procedure

Students may apply for Yale in London irrespective of their declared or intended major. Literature and drama classes fall under Group I of Yale academic subjects and courses in history, history of art and of architecture fall under Group II. Applicants for these programs should normally be in their sophomore or junior year, but applications from freshmen and seniors will be considered. Please follow this link to apply for Yale in London.
