Most of the books in the library are available on open-access in the main reading room. The books are classified according to the Universal Decimal Classification, allowing users to browse by subject on the shelves, or to search on our computerised catalogue. Items are searchable by author, title, series, keyword and notes fields. Individual essays within books and individual periodical articles are also catalogued electronically. Most of the library's auction catalogues are recorded on a separate database and some of these have now been added to our computerised catalogue. Click here to access the online catalogue.
Readers can plug in their own laptops in the main library and take advantage of wireless internet access throughout the Centre. Readers also have access to a black-and-white photocopier (subject to copyright and conservation restrictions). However, using cameras and scanners is not permitted in the library or archives.
The library, which is available for reference only, is open from 10.00 - 17.00 Monday to Friday. However, please make a prior appointment to use the library as it is occasionally closed to accommodate lectures and conferences (click here for details of forthcoming closures). We would recommend an introductory tour of the library for first-time visitors. We also offer tours for groups of librarians or readers (up to a maximum of 20 people at any one time).
For further information about the library or to book an appointment, please email Library or telephone 0207 580 0311.
