The Paul Mellon Centre Library, Archives and Photographic Archive are open by (prior) appointment, made 48 hours in advance of your proposed visit, preferably by mailing collections@paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk, or by calling 020 7580 0311. Access to all collections is provided, in the first instance, in the Public Study Room.

In your email, please include the following information:

  1. The date and time of your proposed visit. As the Public Study Room is not staffed during the lunch break (13.00 to 14.00) please avoid booking an appointment at this time. 
  2. Whether you have been before and registered by completing a Reader Agreement Form 
  3. Your general area of research
  4. For archive and photographic archive collections: details of the material you would like to consult (which should not exceed 10 items and must include collection name, file title, and, where applicable, reference number). Readers are required to identify the material to be consulted at least two working days in advance of their visit in order to give staff enough time to check any uncatalogued collections for sensitive material, and to ensure that there is sufficient supervision in the Public Study Room during the proposed appointment.

If you intend to use the open-access Library material situated in the Public Study Room or Library Annex (details are available on the catalogue), there is no need to book this in advance of your visit.

You will then receive an email from collections staff which confirms your booking and gives details of the date and time of your appointment, and any collection material that you may have requested to be retrieved for you. Please note, if you request more than 10 items, these will be brought to the Public Study Room at the additional retrieval times of 11.30 and 14.00.
