2022 British Art in Motion Winners Announced

The Paul Mellon Centre is thrilled to announce the winners of its inaugural British Art in Motion undergraduate filmmaking competition.

British Art in Motion is designed to empower students to create short films that offer new and original ways of engaging with works of art and architecture.

The works of the nine shortlisted filmmakers who made it through to the competition’s final stage of the competition were screened at the Centre’s first British Art in Motion film festival, held in Bedford Square on 14 October.

The festival also saw the results of this year’s competition being announced. They are:

• First place: Edward Dowding, for his film Southern Motors Garage
• Runner up: Florence Colbeck, Isokon: A Modern Minimum
• Runner up: Bibechana Pun, A. A. Anonymous Amateur
• Commended: Lewis Duncan, Mondial House
• Commended: Karolina Krzeczkowska, Dear Francis
• Commended: Natalia Ozga, re-storation
• Commended: Ella Nowicki, Viscount Jack Hastings’s Frescoes at Buscot Park
• Commended: Jude Parsons, “Girl Staring into a Bakery Window”, Edith Tudor-Hart
• Commended: Delilah Walter, The Yoxman: In Conversation with Laurence Edwards

The external judges for the competition, Professor Lynda Nead and Dr Erika Balsom, were hugely impressed by the diversity of topics, quality of production and level of research that were evident in the shortlisted films.

The Centre is extremely proud to have supported each of the nine student filmmakers and looks forward to running the competition again next year.
