Exhibition: When Dreams Confront Reality

  • 18 August 2022

The When Dreams Confront Reality exhibition, currently showing at The Hepworth Wakefield, is drawn from the Sherwin Collection, one of the most important privately owned collection of British Surrealism, which is now permanently held at The Hepworth Wakefield.

The exhibition, supported by a Paul Mellon Centre Curatorial Research Grant, features paintings, collage, ceramics and sculpture by artists including Eileen Agar, John Banting, Max Ernst and Henry Moore. Works on display reflects the Sherwin Collection’s strengths in holdings by British Surrealists such as Conroy Maddox and Desmond Morris, who brought Surrealism into the twenty-first century, as well as female surrealists such as Leonora Carrington and Edith Rimmington. The exhibition also highlights key aspects of British Surrealism; the engagement with tumultuous political events and fantastical visual explorations of subconscious desires.

The exhibition is showing until January 2023.
