We are very pleased to announce that the Paul Mellon Centre's publication Art and Optics in the Hereford Map: An English Mappa Mundi by Marcia Kupfer has won the Historians of British Art Book Prize for a single-authored book on a pre-1800 subject.
The judging committee praised this ‘theoretically sophisticated and convincingly argued’ book and also noted its many beautiful illustrations.
The winners of the HBA book prizes were chosen from a shortlist that included several other PMC publications: William Hogarth: A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings by Elizabeth Einberg, On Display: Henrietta Maria and the Materials of Magnificence at the Stuart Court by Erin Griffey, Apethorpe: The Story of an English Country House, edited by Kathryn Morrison, John Cattell, et al., and Court, Country, City: British Art and Architecture, 1660–1735, edited by Mark Hallett, Nigel Llewellyn and Martin Myrone.
