New Lecture Series on William Hogarth

The new Public Lecture Course series, Artist in Focus: William Hogarth, is now underway, with the first three lectures available to watch online.

This series of six 30-minute lectures introduces us to the life and work of the artist William Hogarth. Born in London in 1697, Hogarth went on to pursue an extremely varied, productive and successful career. He is especially famous for the satirical pictorial sequences that he described as his ‘modern moral subjects’, and that offered a sustained critique of contemporary urban society and culture.

Convened by Mark Hallett, Meredith Gamer and Lizzie Robles, the lectures explore not only four of Hogarth’s most famous modern moral subjects (including A Harlot's Progress and Industry and Idleness) but also recent artistic responses to these works by artists such as Yinka Shonibare and Lubaina Himid. The lectures take the form of films, created by Jon Law, which has allowed for dynamic and in-depth visual explorations of the works being analysed.

The lectures are released weekly at 3pm on Thursdays, via our website and Youtube channel. They are ideal for teaching, as for anyone with a personal interest in the subject.
