In the run up to the launch of the online archive catalogue for Oliver Millar’s papers later this month we will be publishing a series of highlights selected by the Project Archivist.

Van Dyck: A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings’ is the modern, definitive catalogue raisonné of Anthony Van Dyck published in 2004 by Yale University Press and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. A collaboration between four esteemed experts in aspects of Van Dyck’s work, Oliver Millar contributed the chapter ‘Van Dyck in England’.

Oliver Millar’s archive contains a series of files created during the preparation of the book, with drafts and research notes relating to Millar’s introductory text and catalogue entries. He visited and corresponded with owners and institutions around the world, drawing on knowledge gleaned from examining paintings throughout his career to determine autograph works from studio pieces and copies.

The papers demonstrate the immense levels of scholarship involved in confirming authenticity to create a definitive volume on the work of an artist. The files also document the scope and evolution of the volume over ten years from concept to publication. Also present are Millar’s notes on his enormous amount of background research, with themes as diverse as gout and seventeenth century verse.
