Print! Tearing It Up (currently on at Somerset House) is an exhibition which explores the history and impact of the British independent magazine scene, from the evolution of polemic and progressive print publications to the current diverse industry of innovative independent magazines.
The Paul Mellon Centre's Library is proud to have loaned a rare issue of Axis magazine from 1936 to this exhibition. Axis was amongst the most avant-garde art magazines published in England in the 1930s, launched by writer Myfanwy Jones the magazine championed non-figurative abstract art in Britain in the face of resistance from the art cognoscenti.
The Centre holds two issues of Axis, number 6 (currently being shown at Somerset House) and number 8, these were both donated to the Centre by Peter and Renate Nahum, you can find out more about this donation here.
