Mid-Career Fellowships

Awards of £15,000 to support individuals for four months whilst undertaking a period of sustained research for a clearly defined major project. Applicants must have been awarded their doctorates over six years previously, be established in their careers and have a scholarly profile.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

Awards of £10,000 to support individuals who have had their doctoral theses successfully examined with the three years prior to January 2021 and allow them six months continued doctoral research or to start a new research project. The award is to cover a period of six months.

Junior Fellowships

Awards of £7,500 to support individuals who are advanced in their doctoral research and require an extended period of archival or library research in the United Kingdom. The award is to cover a period of three months.

Research Collections Fellowship

An award of £10,000 to cover a period of twelve months. During this time the fellow will be required to use the Paul Mellon Centre’s archive and library collections to explore an aspect of the development of art history as a discipline in the UK in the twentieth century. The successful fellow is expected to spend as a minimum the equivalent of six weeks at the Centre throughout the year. There is no requirement to give up any existing job or research work.

Rome Fellowship

An award to allow an individual the unique opportunity to undertake three months of dedicated research and work on a topic of British-Italian art history whilst being based at the British School at Rome. This award is open to scholars, researchers, curators and other GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) professionals from immediately post-doctoral to those internationally recognised in their field of expertise.

Research Support Grants

Awards of up to £2,000 towards the expenses incurred in visiting collections, libraries, archives or historic sites within the United Kingdom or abroad for research purposes. Due to the effects of the pandemic, this year applicants can instead apply for costs related to supporting themselves whilst undertaking non-travel related research.

Event Support Grants

Awards of up to £3,000 towards the practical expenses incurred in hosting lectures, conferences, workshops, symposia and seminars for scholars or provided at a scholarly level for the general public. This year applicants can instead apply for expenses incurred in hosting online events and educational programmes.
