Archive Collections

The Centre holds and provides access to archive material relating to the study of British art and architectural history. The collections contain the research papers of art historians, museum directors and curators; dealers; art critics, collectors and other individuals working in the field of art history.

Evelyn Newby

The archive contains Evelyn Newby’s research on the artist, William Hoare of Bath (1707–1792) which Evelyn had originally intended to publish. It includes research notes, images of works, correspondence, photocopies of published material and an alphabetical sequence of files on portrait subjects.

Evelyn Newby is an art historian. She worked as the Photographic Archivist at the Paul Mellon Centre from 1975-1984 and on research projects, including an index of the diaries of Joseph Farington, as well as the artist, William Hoare of Bath.
