The archive contains research material collected and compiled by John Edgcumbe in the course of his research on Sir Joshua Reynolds. The material is arranged into two main sequences: the first, a series of research files on works by Reynolds arranged in 'Graves & Cronin order' [A history of the works of Sir Joshua Reynolds, Graves & Cronin (1899-1901)]; the second a sequence of files on the correspondence of Reynolds arranged chronologically by the date of each letter and culminating in the publication The Letters of Sir Joshua Reynolds edited by John Ingamells and John Edgcumbe (2005). The archive also includes three scrapbooks, compiled in 1974, relating to Edgcumbe's research into Reynolds' visit to Venice in 1752.

Dr John Oliver Edgcumbe (1920-2001) was a haematologist who had a life-long interest in Sir Joshua Reynolds. He was a member of the Reynolds Society and co-edited, with John Ingamells, the publication The Letters of Sir Joshua Reynolds (2005).
