The archive is comprised of Gage's annotated copy of A complete inventory of the drawings of the Turner bequest: with which are included the twenty-three drawings bequeathed by Mr Henry Vaughan. Arranged chronologically by A.J. Finberg, by order of the Trustees, National Gallery, published in 2 volumes in London in 1909 and printed for His Majesty's Stationery Office by Darling and son. The annotations date from c1962 and are extensive including, for example, references to copies and related works; relevant published material; as well as comments about subject matter, colour and style. The volumes were donated by Eric Shanes in 2013 in memory of John Gage.

John Gage (1938-2012) was an art historian, writer and lecturer. He obtained a PhD at the Courtauld Institute titled Colour in Turner: Poetry and Truthin 1969 and thereafter lectured at the University of East Anglia (1967-1979), before moving on to Cambridge where he became head of the History of Art department from 1992-1995. He organised many exhibitions and published several books, including Colour and Culture: Practice and Meaning from Antiquity to Abstraction (published in 1993), which won the Mitchell Prize for Art History. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the British Academy.
