The archive contains research papers mainly relating to Hayes' publications and research on Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), Graham Sutherland (1903-1980), Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) and Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), and his unpublished catalogue for the Cincinnati Art Museum. There are notes, correspondence, unpublished texts and drafts and photographs. The collection also includes an earlier gift of a large set of photographic files of Gainsborough's landscapes, portraits and prints and a smaller set on Gainsborough Dupont (1754-1797). This relates to Hayes' doctoral thesis work and subsequent lifelong interest and writings on Gainsborough.
