The archive contains research notes, correspondence and images relating to Egerton's publications on George Stubbs (1984), Wright of Derby (1990); Making and Meaning: Turner: The Fighting Temeraire (1995), Hogarth's Marriage A-la-Mode (1997) and George Stubbs, Painter (2007). It also includes material pertaining to the exhibitions she curated at Tate on Stubbs (in 1976 and 1984–5) and Wright of Derby (in 1990); research material concerning Egerton's revision of the National Gallery's British School catalogue and her work for the New Dictionary of National Biography, including in particular the entry for the artist, Thomas Jones (1742–1803); and research material related to an unpublished project on Candaules & Gyges.

Judy Egerton (1928–2012) was an art historian and museum curator. She was Assistant Keeper of the British School at the Tate Gallery (1974–1988) and employed by the National Gallery to revise the British School catalogue (1988–1998). At the same time she also took up the position of Senior Research Fellow at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art (1997–2007).
