Archive Collections

The Centre holds and provides access to archive material relating to the study of British art and architectural history. The collections contain the research papers of art historians, museum directors and curators; dealers; art critics, collectors and other individuals working in the field of art history.

The archive contains research notes, correspondence and images relating primarily to the book Baker co-authored with David Bindman, Roubiliac and the Eighteenth-Century Monument: Sculpture as Theatre (1995). It includes published articles concerning the sculptor as well as notes, lectures and articles concerning Baker's wider research interests: the history of sculpture, especially in 18th century Britain, France and Germany; portraiture and the history of collecting and display. The archive also contains lectures and articles written and collected by Baker throughout his career including, in particular, material relating to the redevelopment of the Mediaeval and Renaissance Galleries at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Professor Malcolm Baker (b.1945) is an art historian and museum curator. He was Assistant Keeper of the Department of Art & Archaeology at the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh (1969-1980) and held various positions at the Victoria & Albert Museum (1980-2005) including Assistant Keeper, Department of Sculpture and Deputy Head of Research and Head of the Mediaeval and Renaissance Galleries Project. Between 2003-2007, he worked for the Getty Research Institute. He has taught at Universities of York, Sussex and is currently Distinguished Professor of the History of Art, University of California, Riverside. Malcolm Baker has published widely on the history of sculpture especially in 18th century Britain, France and Germany and the history of collecting and display.
