Archive Collections

The Centre holds and provides access to archive material relating to the study of British art and architectural history. The collections contain the research papers of art historians, museum directors and curators; dealers; art critics, collectors and other individuals working in the field of art history.

The archive contains material related exclusively to the artist George Beare (d. 1749). It includes research notes, correspondence and images compiled during Surry’s research for an exhibition on the artist held at Pallant House, Chichester, in 1989 and his book entitledThe Elusive Mr Beare and Other Essays(2015). This material complements the Centre’s existing holdings on Beare.

Nigel Surry(b. 1936) was a lecturer on local history at Portsmouth Polytechnic and the Open University. He is a recognised expert on the little-known portrait artist George Beare. Surry is also the author of several books on the local history of Hampshire.
