The archive contains material related exclusively to the artist George Beare (d. 1749). It includes research notes, correspondence and images compiled during Surry’s research for an exhibition on the artist held at Pallant House, Chichester, in 1989 and his book entitled The Elusive Mr Beare and Other Essays (2015). This material complements the Centre’s existing holdings on Beare.
Nigel Surry (b. 1936) was a lecturer on local history at Portsmouth Polytechnic and the Open University. He is a recognised expert on the little-known portrait artist George Beare. Surry is also the author of several books on the local history of Hampshire.
