Archive Collections

The Centre holds and provides access to archive material relating to the study of British art and architectural history. The collections contain the research papers of art historians, museum directors and curators; dealers; art critics, collectors and other individuals working in the field of art history.

Robert Raines

The archive contains notes, photographs, cuttings, card indexes and correspondence relating to foreign artists working in Britain in the early eighteenth century covering, in particular, Peter Tillemans (c.1684-1734), Marcellus Laroon (1679-1772) and Egbert van Heemskerck (1634-1704). Some of the material relates to Raines' monograph for Marcellus Laroon (1966) and other publications. The papers include material relating to research projects Raines undertook with John Ingamells on Dutch and Flemish genre painting in England from c. 1660-1770, including in particular Raines' research from inventories of households and collections. The collection also includes general art related press cuttings from c.1916-1918.

Dr Robert Raines (1909-1986) was Medical Officer at Hull University and an amateur art historian.
