Library Collections

The library collections cover British painting, sculpture, drawing, prints, decorative arts, architecture and garden history from the medieval period to the present day. The collections on British artists and architects, the British and Irish country house and the eighteenth-century Grand Tour are particularly strong.

Auction Catalogues

We have 8000 auction catalogues, mainly dating from the late-nineteenth century to the present and including sales held at Christie's, Sotheby's and Phillips.

The library has the personal collection built up, and annotated, by William Roberts and later owned by Sir Ellis Waterhouse. This collection is in the process of being catalogued on the library catalogue. This collection contains some rare and hard to find catalogues as well as many on-the-premises sales.

The collection of Christie’s and other auction catalogues, formerly belonging to Arthur Tooth & Sons gallery, and annotated by them with the names of purchasers and prices, is also in the library. This collection of 90 volumes containing over 3000 individual titles dating from 1868 to 1929 has been fully catalogued on the library catalogue.

There is an access database listing all unbound auction catalogues which is held at the Centre.

An increasing number of auction catalogues have been catalogued on the library and photographic archive catalogue.
