Library Collections

The library collections cover British painting, sculpture, drawing, prints, decorative arts, architecture and garden history from the medieval period to the present day. The collections on British artists and architects, the British and Irish country house and the eighteenth-century Grand Tour are particularly strong.

Periodicals The library holds 200 periodical titles on the subjects of art, architecture and garden history. Many of these are current titles including Apollo, Burlington, Country Life, as well as some subject specific titles such as Furniture History, Print Quarterly, Garden History and Journal of the History of Collections. There are some interesting mid-20th century titles such as Horizon, Motif and Walker’s Quarterly. We have a number of 19th and early 20th century titles, including issues of Magazine of Art, Art Union, Art Journal, and The Studio.

All journal, report and annual titles and issues have been catalogued on our library catalogue as well as all journal articles of relevance to the collections published since 1998. There are more than 10,000 article records on the library catalogue. This allows for seamless searching by subject of journals, books, exhibition catalogues and other media. The library does not offer reader access to any electronic journal titles.

The Centre’s periodical holdings have been catalogued on the library and photographic archive catalogue as well as Library Hub Discover.
