Junior Fellowships are offered annually for the purpose of pursuing further British art or architectural history doctoral research in the United Kingdom based at the Paul Mellon Centre.

They are designed for applicants who are advanced in their doctoral research and need to have an extended period of archival or library research in the United Kingdom.

The Fellowship is an award of £7,500 to cover a period of three months.

Three-month full-time Junior Fellowships are specifically designed to:

  • Allow further doctoral research in the UK based at the Paul Mellon Centre

Junior Fellowships are awards of £7,500 paid as one lump sum directly to the Fellow.

The Centre does not pay full economic costs.

If a Fellow accepts full-time employment during the period of the Junior Fellowship, the Centre will request an appropriate reimbursement of the award.

Our funding programme supports scholarship, academic research and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of British art and architectural history only. All supported topics must have an historical perspective.

To apply for a Junior Fellowship you must be a scholar already engaged in doctoral research. This is a research fellowship and will not be awarded to scholars in the early stages of their doctoral research nor will they be awarded for the final stages of writing-up.

Junior Fellowships are for the academic year 2021/2022 and may be taken between September 2021 and September 2022. Fellowships cannot be deferred to later academic years nor can they run concurrently with a Fellowship awarded by another institution.
