• At the autumn 2004 meeting of the Centre’s Advisory Council the following Grants were awarded:

Curatorial Research Grants

  • Bodleian Library, for three years towards the appointment of a part-time research curator to expand and update descriptions of illuminated British manuscripts in the Bodleian's on-line catalogue.
  • Djanogly Gallery, towards the appointment of a research curator to work on the exhibition From Victorian to Modern: Laura Knight, Vanessa Bell, Gwen John 1890-1914 (Oct - Dec 2006 Djanogly Art Gallery, Jan - March 2007 Dulwich PG).
  • Leighton House Museum, towards the salary of a Curator over a six-month period in order to continue working on the on-line catalogue of drawings by Lord Leighton.
  • Scottish National Portrait Gallery to allow Duncan Forbes, Senior Curator of Photography to undertake six months of research on John Muir Wood. The resulting essay will be included in the catalogue of the exhibition on the photographer by the American Federation of Arts and will be extended with a catalogue for the National Galleries of Scotland.
  • Ruskin Gallery, Sheffield Galleries & Museums Trust to employ a research curator to complete work on The Ruskin Collection of the Guild of St George.
  • Society of Antiquaries, for one further year to allow Jill Franklin to continue in her part-time post, working on the cataloguing of their collection of paintings.
  • Whitechapel Art Gallery, towards the appointment of an archive research curator to research and curate a programme of archive presentations for the inaugural year of the expanded Whitechapel Gallery in 2008.

  • Mary & Leigh Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University, towards a one-day conference William Morris in Context: The Public and Private Life of an Artist (12 February 2005, Block Museum of Art).
  • Victoria & Albert Museum, towards a two-day conference The Georgian Interior (4-5 November 2005, V&A).
  • The University of York, towards a two-day conference The Aesthetic Interior: Neo-Gothic, Aesthetic, Arts and Crafts (28-29 October 2005, The Institute for English Studies, London).
  • The University of York, towards a one-day conference Art and the Islands: Centre and Periphery in British Art in the Time of William Orpen (4 February 2005,Tate Britain).

  • Vanessa Alayrac towards a research trip to London to work on her PhD thesis on Chinoiserie in 18th-century England.
  • ChristopherAugerson towards a research trip to London to work on English vehicle paints in the 18th & 19th century, the results will be published in The Artistry and Technology of Carriage Painting and Decoration co-authored with Merri Ferrell.
  • Alexander Bremner towards a research trip to Canada to work on his book Ecclesiology and the Colonial Church: Architecture, Empire and Identitity in the Mid-Victorian Imagination 1840-70.
  • Tamara Griggs towards a research trip to London to work on an article "Drawn from Nature: Text and Image” in The Antiquities of Athens (1762-1816).
  • Gillian Hunter towards a research trip to South Africa to work on her Phd thesis on William White.
  • Noah Hysler-Rubin towards a research trip to Scotland to work on her Phd thesis on Patrick Geddes, Town Planner in the British Colonies: a Comparative Study of his work in Britain, in India and in Palestine.
  • Joseph James towards the cost of creating a digital record of the designs and fine bindings of Talwin Morris (1865-1911).
  • Steven R. Kendall towards a research trip to UK & Paris to work on his Phd thesis "Classicism & Modernity: Frederic Leighton, The French Academy, and the Anglicised Nude".
  • Evgeny Khodakovsky towards a research trip to London to work on his Phd thesis Alexander Cozens and his "Encyclopedia of Landscape".
  • Christiana Payne towards a research trip within UK to work on her monograph on John Brett (1831-1902).
  • Amy Sargeant towards a research trip within UK, Italy and France to work on a monograph of Alexander MacKendrick's film The Man in the White Suit (1951).
