What Is the Time Commitment for This Programme?
This is a residential programme based in London and South Africa 15–26 July 2024. All participants are expected to arrive in London on the Friday prior to the start of the programme, 12 July, travel to South Africa with their peers mid-programme and leave South Africa for home the weekend after the conclusion of the programme. There will be some opportunities for private research time and rest across the two weeks, but if you have any specific concerns about the programme do get in touch.
What Is the Cost to Me?
GSP is free for all participants, including some evening social events, and also covers the cost of travel (airfare, trains, visas) to London and South Africa, and accommodation for the duration of the two-week programme. Participants are expected to pay for their own meals while in London and South Africa, though some meals will be included as part of the programme. Will I Need a Visa for Entry to the UK?
Depending on your nationality, you may or may not need a visa to visit the UK. You should check if you need a visa on the Home Office website. If you have any questions or require assistance, please do get in touch.
Will I Need a Visa for Entry to South Africa?
Depending on your nationality, you may need a visitor’s visa to visit South Africa. You should check if you need a visa on the Department for Home Affairs website. If you have any questions or require assistance, please do get in touch.
Will I Need Health Insurance to Participate in the Programme?
All students enrolled in the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences are automatically covered by Yale’s emergency travel insurance, International SOS. Students who have the basic health plan from Yale Health may also have additional coverage. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have adequate coverage for your two-week stay in London and South Africa. You can find out more about health insurance coverage on the Yale website.
All students from the UK and from South Africa should please check with your institution what insurance coverage may be available to you and purchase insurance if your institution does not provide any.
Will I Need Vaccinations to Visit the UK?
It is advisable but not required that primary courses and boosters are up to date for the following vaccinations:
- seasonal flu
- measles, mumps and rubella
Will I Need Vaccinations to Visit South Africa?
It is advisable but not required that you have the following vaccinations:
- diphtheria
- hepatitis A
- hepatitis B
- rabies
- tetanus
- typhoid
For travellers arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, it is required that you provide a yellow fever vaccination certificate. You can determine whether you will need this here.
