The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art has a long history of publishing distinguished books and catalogues on British art and architecture, in association with Yale University Press. In recent years, the PMC has also become a pioneer in the field of online publications.

The PMC provides generous support for authors and is committed to publishing original, rigorous and creative scholarship of the highest standards.

We welcome submissions for books, articles or online publications on all aspects of British art and architecture.

Books

Book manuscripts are first reviewed by an in-house editorial team to judge their potential suitability for the PMC list. If a submission proceeds beyond this first stage, it will then undergo a rigorous peer-review process conducted by anonymous subject-specialist reviewers. The reports provided by those reviewers are shared with the author, who is then expected to produce a written response. On completion of the peer-review process, a manuscript is then presented to our publications committee, which makes the final decision as to which projects the PMC will publish.

Prospective authors of books should submit a full draft manuscript in digital form, including a title page and table of contents. Please also provide the word count (including all endmatter). We also require an indication of the proposed number of images; if you have a caption list, please include that with your submission, and it is helpful to have a set of reference images, if available. Please provide reference images as a single pdf.

We also accept book proposals, if you are at an earlier stage of the writing process. Please include a full summary of the project (including chapter synopses), a table of contents and a sample chapter. Be aware, however, that a proposal will only allow us to give a very general indication of whether the project might be suitable for us when complete.

All submissions for book projects should be directed to Emily Lees at elees@paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk.

Digital publications

We are open to receiving submissions for digital publications, including catalogues raisonnés. Please submit a detailed project proposal to Baillie Card at bcard@paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk.
