Group of men and women examining map This symposium offers an opportunity for doctoral students to share their work on topics related to the history of British art and architecture. It will provide a friendly and supportive environment for researchers to develop works-in-progress and to test out new ideas.

The aim of the day is to showcase the diverse range of new research into British art and architecture currently being undertaken by doctoral students, and to highlight areas of cross-over and connection with a view to stimulating discussion, collaboration and new ideas. As this will be the inaugural symposium hosted by the Paul Mellon Centre’s Doctoral Researchers Network, contributions on the day will also help to shape the activities of the DRN going forward.

A full programme for the symposium is available below. It includes sessions on travel, gendered mediums, the archival impulse and conflict. The papers cover a wide variety of topics – from the secular significance of late medieval reredoses to silhouette film-making in the 1920s, and from the dazzling use of fireworks during eighteenth-century voyages of exploration to Nigel Henderson’s photographic exploration of bombsites in post-war London.

Lunch is provided and the symposium finishes with a drinks reception and networking event, hosted in collaboration with our sister network, Early Career Researchers in British Art.

The event is free to attend for DRN members but registration is required.

If you cannot attend the whole symposium, you are welcome to come just for the networking event in the evening.
