ECRN: Alt-Ac Showcase and Away Day

ECRN Events

  • 14 November 2024
  • 10:00 – 5:00 pm
  • This is an event for Early Career Researchers Network (ECRN) members only. You can find out more about the network here.
  • The Barber Institute of Fine Arts

In collaboration with the CALt-Ac Network at the University of Birmingham, the ECRN will host an “Alt-Ac Showcase” at the University of Birmingham. This is an excellent opportunity to meet (other) “alternative academics” – which means professional services staff in higher education or similar institutions who are research active.

In the morning, join ECRN Convenor, Cai Lyons, for a tour of the Barber Institute of Fine Art and the new exhibition Scent and the Art of the Pre-Raphaelites, followed by lunch.

The aim of this event is to provide a space for members of the ECRN, especially those who do not have easy access to peer support, to share works in progress, from conference papers to journal articles to research strategy to postdoctoral applications. In a “speed-networking”-style session, PMC ECRN members will be divided into small groups to share (or troubleshoot) research ideas in an informal and supportive environment – there is no need to submit anything in advance, but you can do so via email ([email protected]).

Interspersed between offerings from members of the ECRN and CALt-Ac, there will also be:

  • a session on open access journals
  • a session on publishing your first monograph, led by Thomas Stottor, Executive Editor at Oxford University Press
  • a keynote lecture by Dr Karen McAulay

Karen McAulay is an established Alt-Ac who combines parallel careers as both librarian at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and a research active musicologist about to publish her second monograph. She has just completed a research council-funded residency at St Andrews University and her talk will cover how she applied for this bid along with her top tips on managing her parallel careers and the perennial problems of balancing “the day job”, family commitments and research.

After the event, participants will be welcome to stay to attend the free Barber Lates event inspired by the Scent and the Art of the Pre-Raphaelites exhibition.

Lunch will be provided. Please provide your dietary requirements when booking a ticket.

Travel bursaries are available for ECRN members.
