What does music look like? What are the interrelations between the sounds of popular music and the aesthetics and images they produce? In this series of four specially-commissioned talks, the artist Jeremy Deller has invited designers, musicians and writers to explore the look of music through presentations, discussion and conversation. Talks will take place in different venues in central London and will all start at 6.30pm.
Jeremy Deller will open the series with a talk on Wednesday 10th January which will explore this topic in relation to his own work and which will also introduce the speakers he has invited to contribute to “The Look of Music” series.
This talk, delivered by stage designer Es Devlin, will discuss designing space for music and lyrics. Es Devlin creates kinetic sculptures in opera, dance, theatre, fashion and music, as well as solo work. She has created stage sculptures in collaboration with Beyoncé, Kanye West, US, Jay Z and Adele. She designed the London Olympic closing ceremony and the Rio Olympic opening ceremony, and continues to work in theatre at all scales. Es Devlin has been awarded the 2017 London Design Medal, and three Olivier Awards. She is a Fellow of University of the Arts London, and was made OBE in 2015.
Please note that this event will take place at 180 The Strand, WC2R 1EA.
