Public Event Series Convened by Dr Christina Faraday
The Tudor century famously witnessed enormous cultural, religious and political upheaval; it was also immensely exciting for visual and material culture. This public event series explores the art of the Tudor period in all its richness and variety, through a selection of roundtables and site-specific sessions. The series is open to all and no prior knowledge is needed to attend.
The roundtables will bring together experts across a range of areas to present a snapshot of current thought, reflecting art history’s expanding horizons. They will explore the breadth of material now under the scrutiny of art historians, including the long-neglected decorative arts, as well as the many global connections evident in the period’s visual and material culture. A further session will bring together contemporary artists working in a variety of media to discuss the ways that the imagery and culture of the Tudor period continue to inspire them.
Running alongside these discussions is a series of site visits, including a practice-based historical printing workshop and tours exploring cutting-edge approaches to curating and displaying the period. The series will culminate with a visit to the new Tudor galleries at the newly reopened National Portrait Gallery, followed by a discussion about new directions in the study of Tudor portraiture.
No prior art historical knowledge is necessary.
The series is convened by historian of art and ideas, Dr Christina Faraday.
Registration via Eventbrite is required and opens 20 March. Roundtable discussions will take place in person at the Paul Mellon Centre and will also be streamed live via Zoom Webinar. Off-site events will not be streamed.
