A lunchtime talk by Sarah Victoria Turner (Paul Mellon Centre)
On the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, this talk will explore how the Suffrage movement used images and art to promote their cause. It will look at women artists who contribute to the visual and material cultures of the Suffragettes, from banners, pin badges and magazine illustration, to large-scale mural decorations, paintings and sculpture. Drawing on the “Share the Square” theme of BSF 2018, this talk will use archival photography to examine how Suffragettes used visual images in public space and made streets, art galleries and meeting halls sites of protest.
A light lunch is provided.
This event is part of Bedford Square Festival 4 July - 7 July 2018

The aim of the Bedford Square Festival was to promote the culture based around a London Square, sharing this with our neighbours in Bloomsbury and beyond. We wanted to open the doors of the grand facades of the buildings in the Square and celebrate the culture that we pride ourselves on - art, literature, architecture, history, education, and more!
