The term ‘digital art history’ has become a shorthand reference for the potentially transformative effect that digital technologies hold for the discipline of art history. Advanced technologies are making research materials more widely accessible and allowing scholars and artists to ask and answer new questions – and many of the Paul Mellon Centre’s output reflect this shift in the research landscape. In this event, panellists will speak about the role that digital technologies have played in their careers, discussing subjects such as the creation of podcasts and the setting up and running of blogs. There will be a Q+A session in the second half of the event in which DRN and ECRN members can ask about both the technical and research elements of creating podcasts, social media accounts, blogs, and websites.

This event is a joint event and will be co-hosted by the co-convenors of both the DRN and the ECRN.

About the speakers

  • Headshot of Lisa Anderson

    Lisa Anderson is the Interim Managing Director for The Black Cultural Archives. A multi-talented independent curator, consultant, and champion for Black British Art, Lisa founded @blackbritishart; a curatorial platform dedicated to celebrating this evergreen arts territory. In 2019 she established Lisa Anderson Art Advisory to advise collectors with a special interest in Black British Art. Lisa sits on the advisory boards of Addis Fine Art and Araba Scott Children's Foundation. She has also developed a successful career in fundraising and business development, most recently as the Corporate Partnerships Lead at The Lord Mayor’s Appeal.

    Ferren Gipson is an art historian and creative, researching modern art and exploring themes of politics, popular culture and identity. She is the acclaimed author of Women’s Work and The Ultimate Art Museum and, as a dynamic storyteller, has contributed to the Financial Times and hosted the Art Matters podcast. Ferren has previously taught at the Courtauld Institute and SOAS, as well as delivering guest lectures for institutions such as the Royal Academy of Art. Within her art practice, Ferren explores themes of spirituality, materiality and matrilineal ties. She has previously shown with Hauser & Wirth and Unit London.

    Dr Madeleine Pelling is an art historian specialising in the visual and material cultures of eighteenth-century Britain, as well as their reimagining across digital media today. She completed her PhD in 2018 at the University of York, where she was the recipient of the History of Art Department doctoral scholarship. Since then, she has held postdoctoral fellowships at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and the universities of Manchester and Edinburgh. Madeleine is co-editor of A Cultural History of Historiography: The Age of Enlightenment and Revolutions (forthcoming, Bloomsbury) and is currently preparing a monograph, The Duchess' Museum: Collecting, Craft and Conversation, 1730–1786, and a trade press book, Writing on the Wall: Graffiti in the Age of Revolutions, for publication. She co-convenes the New Directions in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Art digital seminar series and is co-host and producer of the Travelling Sisterhood for Art Historians podcast.
