The British Art Talks podcast is a new audio series from the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. It features new research and aims to enhance and expand knowledge of British art and architecture.

Lisa Tickner, a leading historian of British art, has just published a new book on the dynamic art world that emerged in 1960s London. In this podcast, she talks with Mark Hallett about the remarkable array of artists, curators, galleries, art-schools, films, publications and documentaries focused on in the course of her research, and about the highly original way she has written her book.

About the speakers

Lisa Tickner is Honorary Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art, Professor Emerita at Middlesex University, a Fellow of the British Academy and a Trustee of the Art Fund. She is the author or co-editor of ten books on art history and cultural studies including The Spectacle of Women; imagery of the suffrage campaign 1907-1914 (1988) and Modern Life & Modern Subjects: British art in the early twentieth century (2000). London's New Scene: art and culture in the 1960s, draws on years of research but was completed in the course of a Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship (2016-18).
Mark Hallett is Märit Rausing Director at the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was previously Director at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. He is the author and editor of many books on British art, and has been involved in curating numerous exhibitions. He was the co-curator, with his colleague Sarah Victoria Turner, of the 2018 Royal Academy exhibition, The Great Spectacle: The Royal Academy and its Summer Exhibitions 1769–2018, and co-authored the accompanying catalogue.
