This talk offers a brief overview of George Morland's life and work. Morland's reputation for prodigious talent and prodigal living has been kept alive by historians who tend to polarise the personal and social dimensions of his life. His paintings are often interpreted with reference to his reputed disregard for polite society and preference for association with the lower orders, or his early success, long decline and inevitable early death. My talk breaks from this tradition and suggests instead that a more relative value such as 'margins' can offer a better way of exploring the complexities of Morland's subject matter, working practices, and life.
