This visit to the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool will provide an important opportunity to see how a major institution is dealing with the legacies of colonialism, slavery and the British Empire, and to hear directly from those pioneering this change.

The visit will be based around three path-breaking displays and exhibitions: Conversations – a major show of work by forty leading Black women and non-binary artists; Stitching Souls: Threads of Silence – an installation by the British Trinidadian artist Karen McLean to commemorate the victims of the 1781 Zong Massacre; and finally Carving Out Truths – where young people from Liverpool’s Black and Global Ethnic Majority communities have staged interventions into the Walker’s sculpture collection. Critically, we will hear from Sumuyya Khader, the artist and creative from Liverpool who has curated Conversations, and also the young people who have led the Carving Out Truths project.

The day will run from 11am to approximately 4pm and include lunch at the Walker. A travel bursary is available to support you attending this event (this applies to domestic travel costs and does not include overnight accommodation or flights). Please do get in touch with Kaissa Karhu on [email protected] if you have any questions about the travel bursary, access, or dietary requirements.
