This PhD Toolkit session will teach DRN members about good writing behaviours, advise them about what to expect when receiving feedback from editors, and show them how to improve their chances of getting published. Our three speakers will discuss how to:

  • Prepare writing for publication
  • Manage writing behaviours that may hinder progress
  • Respond to feedback from editors
  • Use revision techniques to effectively and efficiently revise and restructure text
  • Use editing techniques to improve clarity and conciseness
  • Improve your chances of getting published (for both academic and non-academic audiences)

About the speakers

    Isabella Vitti is Routledge’s editor for art history and visual studies monographs and edited collections. Her talk will cover how to get published, including how to choose a publisher, how to think about the audience for your book, and proposal-writing tips. It will be very helpful for recent PhDs and will also cover revising your PhD dissertation into a monograph. But it will have useful insights for any scholar or researcher who is interested in publishing their work.

    Sarah Turner is an art historian, curator and writer. She is Director at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in London, which is part of Yale University. From 2008 to 2013 she was Lecturer in the Department of History of Art at the University of York and was Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Courtauld Institute of Art between 2016 and 2018. Sarah is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She is the founding Editor-in-Chief of British Art Studies, an award-winning digital arts publication.     Baillie Card is a senior editor of open access scholarly publications at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, London. Her projects include the award-winning journal British Art Studies and an online history of the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, chronicle250.com. Previously, she was the commissioning editor of academic books on international modern and contemporary art and visual culture at I.B.Tauris & Co (since acquired by Bloomsbury). Baillie is interested in issues of access and sustainability in academic publishing, and in how traditional formats can be rethought, in print and online, to better convey the insights and methods of research.
