In association with the National Portrait Gallery, the Centre is organising a two-day conference to celebrate the reopening, in May 2003, of the National Portrait Gallery's newly refurbished and redesigned display of Regency pictures. The conference will examine the nature of portraiture in a period which although familiar is ill-defined as an historical concept. The speakers will consider portraiture in relation to areas such as the art, the reception and historiography of Sir Thomas Lawrence; personality and the creation of celebrity; propaganda and reform; and the subversion of the genre of portraiture.
