Three independent scholars and museum practitioners will share their experiences of working independently, and discuss the impact this has had on their access to sources, funding, and professional opportunities. At the same time, our speakers will share the creative ways they have shaped their own projects and disrupted institutional hierarchies by working outside the academy.

In this panel discussion event, we will address the precarious job market faced by ECRs. As fixed-term and part-time contracts become increasingly common in academia and the museum and heritage sector, continuing research as an unaffiliated scholar is a reality many of us will face during our careers.

Our speakers will each give a 15-minute talk, followed by a Q&A session and a general discussion on the current state of professional development for ECRs.
